Open Doors to Proclaim God's Glory

Twenty-five years ago, music opened the door for our founder, Roger McMurrin, to come to Ukraine. The invitation he received to conduct Handel's Messiah has grown into a dynamic ministry whose mission includes evangelism and care for widows, orphans, and victims of war.

But music is always at the heart of what we do, whether it's a Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (KSOC) friendship evangelism concert, music lessons for children, or the music you may be listening to right now.

On October 30, Music Mission Kiev has the incredible opportunity to share the sacred music that declares God's glory at a major national event in Ukraine celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation (also known as R500).

First, a quick history lesson. Initiated by Martin Luther in 1517 with the publication of his Ninety-Five Theses, the Reformation was a movement that changed the course of the church—and the world. It was a break from the Catholic Church, a theological shift in the understanding of Scripture and salvation, and an event that marked the beginning of the modern era. This just scratches the surface; there are many more layers about the Reformation to explore.

By Presidential Proclamation, this year's 500th anniversary has been a cultural and governmental focus in Ukraine. The Ministry of Culture and the R500 Committee (a group comprised of both church and government leaders) are planning a National Reformation Day gala event for October 30 and have invited the KSOC to present Mendelssohn's Symphony #2 (Hymn of Praise). You can watch a 2016 performance below.

Just like that first invitation 25 years ago, this concert is another open door for Music Mission Kiev. It's both a great honor for the talented musicians of the KSOC to perform on a national stage and an opportunity to proclaim the gospel to many.

The to-do list is long to prepare for this event and you can help. Will you pray with us?

  • Pray that the KSOC will boldly declare the gospel.

  • Pray for the KSOC musicians as they prepare and rehearse for this major event.

  • Pray that all of the National Reformation Day activities would bring glory and honor to God.

  • Pray for the R500 Committee as they oversee the many details of the gala event.
