The most destitute people in Kiev are the widows. Many of them are forced to beg on the street just to survive. The McMurrins saw this great need, and God laid it on their hearts to help.
Members of the church went to the "social security" office to obtain a list of widows that no longer had a family; these were the most destitute. They started with that list and delivered a packet of food weekly. Soon they took a Bible with the food.
It took some time to gain the trust of these widows because no one had given them anything before, without expecting something in return. As the doors literally started to open, they also shared the love of Christ and the gift of salvation.
Today, MMK feeds over 300 widows/pensioners. Many of these widows and pensioners participate in either a weekly new members class, Evangelism Explosion, Stephen's Ministry and/or prayer group where they are growing spiritually. Those who are physically able, attend St. Paul's Evangelical church. Those who are unable to come to church have their food delivered by Stephen's ministry or KSOC members.
The widows that have come to Christ are among our greatest "Christian soldiers". The Babushka Brigade is an evangelism team composed of widows and widowers that have received training in Evangelism Explosion and share their faith with others. God is using this forgotten people to build His Kingdom in Ukraine.
